DYSLEXIA AWARENESS

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month

Our hope is that we can provide information to help you understand dyslexia and how it can be managed. Gunter ISD has two Dyslexia Specialists who can help you if you have questions. Thank you to Jennie Bullard (GMS & GHS) and Laurie Endsley (GES) for giving our students tools to use to decode the information and be successful in their classwork and life.

Did you know....

• 20% of the population has dyslexia. That means 1 in 5 of your students are dyslexic and some of those are not yet identified.

• Dyslexia is not just seeing letters backward. It is neurobiological in origin and affects the way that the brain processes information.

• There is no cure for dyslexia, but with intense multi-sensory therapy, students will learn strategies to decode information to read.

• People with dyslexia are not lazy or unable to read. However, because of the amount of time and energy it takes for kids with dyslexia to decode the information, reading can be physically exhausting for them.
